Façade Retention and Stone Masonry Works – Atlantic Square, Glasgow
Atlantic Square is a landmark mixed-use development in the heart of Glasgow, comprising approximately 300,000 sq ft of premium office, retail, and residential space. A defining feature of the project was the retention and restoration of a historic sandstone warehouse façade along James Watt Street. This listed structure—Grade A or Category C depending on source classification—now forms the striking historical frontage of the new Buildings 1 and 2.
The façade retention was a technically complex and highly sensitive operation, requiring precise planning and execution to maintain the structural and aesthetic integrity of the original stonework throughout the construction process. A bespoke temporary propping and support system was designed and installed to hold the 175-tonne façade in place, allowing demolition and construction to proceed safely behind it.
Leading the specialist conservation efforts, CBC Stone Restoration & Conservation undertook the meticulous restoration of the original sandstone façade. Their work focused on preserving the historic character of the building while adapting it for seamless integration with the contemporary architecture of the new development. This involved both in-situ conservation and the replacement of damaged or weathered stone units using traditional materials and techniques.
Working collaboratively with the main contractor and heritage preservation architect, CBC ensured that the restored stonework—particularly at ground level—was harmoniously juxtaposed against the bold, glazed, and steel-framed upper volumes of the new structure. The result is a sophisticated blend of old and new: a respectful nod to Glasgow’s architectural past, set within a thoroughly modern development.
The Atlantic Square project exemplifies best practice in heritage-led urban regeneration. Through the use of advanced digital modelling, phased construction sequencing, and expert craftsmanship, the development successfully preserves and celebrates a key piece of Glasgow’s architectural heritage—while delivering a state-of-the-art commercial space fit for the future.
